Merely shadows of ourselves

Merely Shadows of Ourselves is another personal project that I have been working on for a while. I often meet people, young and old, who have a really low opinion of themselves. I have the feeling that from a very young age we are programmed to yearn for the acceptance of people around us - our parents, friends, teachers, partners... We want to please these people, but we tend to forget that it’s impossible to please everyone. Sometimes critiques and rejections are like a collision with reality, but this reality is not our reality, it’s somebody else's reality.

I have decided to show you that we can be so much more than we sometimes believe we are.  I am going to try to show you this through my reality, through the world that I know the best. Extreme sports.  I used to do my share of extreme sports and I still enjoy them. Since I decided to become a professional photographer I've been working with extreme sports athletes most of the time and I couldn't help but notice that these are some incredible people. They fall down a lot, they hurt a lot, but every single time they get up and try again and again and again... until they finally succeed. They don't tell themselves “I’m no good", "I will never make it", "its too hard"... they cannot let themselves think this way. Do you think Robbie Maddison would jump Corinth Channel on his MX bike thinking "its impossible"? Do you think Felix Baumgartner would train for the biggest moment of his life thinking "I'm no good"?

We are capable of so much more than we dare to believe we are. This is what I believe and thats why I want to share these photos with you. Are we creators of our future and well being or merely shadows of someones else's creation?
